Bangladesh. Hijra
The word hijra is diffused throghout the Indian sub-continent to say hermaphrodite. Hijras were born men, but they feel like women, they dress like women and behave like women. In India, Pakistan and Bangladesh hijras are feared and marginalized at the same time. On one hand are out of the system and, therefore, must be kept at a distance, on the other hand they are believed to have the power to give and take away the fertility. Hijras are asked to dance and sing in special circumstances like births, marriages and illness. They often earn money with prostitution. They live in small communities headed by a “guru” who is believed to have super-natural powers.
